I love food, I think it’s one of the universal joys that makes life worth living. I love many different types of food and preparation styles, but I must admit that even I have my limits.

Portland is a great foodie city. If there’s one thing that the hipsters have really given to the plebs here, it’s culinary revelry. We have an excellent food cart culture with experimental fusions, grungy dive bars with late night eats, and hoity-toity sit down restaurants that offer gourmet dining “experiences”.

One of my new favorite upscale dine-in experiences that captures a bit of this food love is a quick appetizer plate. It’s great, you can chop a bunch of no-cook appetizers up and present a lavish spread without breaking the bank almost every night. Throw in a hardwood cutting board for presentation, and you’ll feel like a king enjoying the most sumptuous meal. You can almost see your imaginary servants bringing you out a lavish spread of cut meats, cheeses, and fruit, fanning you while you devour your way to the heart of excess.

Here are a few of the favorites in my household when you’re looking to make the perfect no hassle appetizer platter:

  • Apples
  • Strawberries
  • Raspberries
  • Brie
  • Goat Cheese
  • Peppercorn Crackers
  • Honeycomb (honey really is the flavor enhancer for those extra tart fruits)
  • Summer Sausages or Prosciutto
